Park Springs Showcase

by Lisa Kiely

Park Springs is excited to host a “new talent” audition Sunday, June 5th which we are calling the Park Springs Showcase.

We receive hundreds of requests to perform via phone calls, emails and proposals.   Over the years we have tried many ways to review this information and provide an opportunity for new and exciting talent.

One day I began thinking it would be really fun to have an open audition similar to those you see on popular television shows.  Wanting to entice the talent to come and perform I started thinking of ways to enhance their desire to come out and audition.  I was sure that other Atlanta retirement Communities experienced the same things and then thought it might be nice if we had several Communities involved in the actual event.

Soon we had commitments from Briarcliff Oaks, Clairemont Oaks, Lenbrook and a maybe from Canterbury Court.  I scheduled a meeting to discuss the strategy and together we determined that each Community would provide a judge, three new talents and transportation from their Community to ours for 10-15 of their members. A small stipend will be provided for all talent participants and a monetary prize available for the top three performers. Working together we can provide our talent with the opportunity to be seen by many Atlanta active adult communities and perhaps get more “bookings”!

We have a Park Springs member, Marvin Himmel, who has agreed to be the stage manager to design our stage set up, sound and lighting and we have another member who is considering being our MC.

Park Springs will provide reception for all talent and members, and we will take photographs to share in the future.

I am certain this will be a fun evening for our members, and guests!

Park Springs Partners with DeKalb County Fire Department

FIRE AND RESCUE

Recently Park Springs and the DeKalb County Fire Department joined forces.  Our Atlanta active adult community has reached out to the local fire department in order to provide training to our Members on what to do in the unlikely event of a fire.  DeKalb County Fire Officials jumped at the opportunity to use Park Springs as an offsite training center.

At approximately 9:00am, a fire alarm was initiated in the 1000 building at Park Springs by the management team.  Immediately, all staff jumped into action.  Checkpoints were established on either side of the building with Raymond Previto and Ginger Hansborough taking attendance of all Members living in the 1000 building.  The maintenance and security teams were on the radio discussing where the emergency was initiated.  Within minutes, the DeKalb County Fire Department was on site, and initiated a sweep of the building to ensure all Members were clear of any danger.

Upon completion of the drill, the “All Clear” signal was issued, and all Members returned to their units.  Each member was accounted for by utilization of attendance logs, member away logs, assistance logs, and the buddy system, in order to locate any member not physically accounted for.

This was a great learning experience for all teams involved.  It gave our senior housing in Atlanta practice on how to handle an emergency.  The Fire Department gained valuable knowledge of our campus, systems, and buildings.  Furthermore, through great communication and teamwork, both DeKalb County Fire Department, and Park Springs will adjust our procedures to get even better in our response to such emergencies.

We will utilize our lessons learned for our next drill which will occur in the spring when the weather is a little warmer.  In the future, we will continue to work together to conduct additional drills in order to ensure that all Members, employees, and the fire department will know the absolute best way to handle any emergency.

Rotary Club of Stone Mountain to Salute Park Springs Veterans May 25

What an honor it is to have the Rotary Club of Stone Mountain to come to our Atlanta active adult community to salute our Members that are veterans, and honor those who have passed. The salute will happen on the Tuesday before Memorial Day. The keynote speaker during the salute will be Lee S. Harford, Jr., PhD, an Army Reserve Historian. He has written many articles and given numerous speeches to veterans during his career.

This is the third year that the Stone Mountain Rotary Club has come to our Atlanta continuing care retirement community to pay tribute our veterans for this event. The Members and staff at our Atlanta senior homes are excited about the turnout, since last year’s was so great. We look forward to the event and are very thankful to share this opportunity between the Stone Mountain Rotary Club and us here at Park Springs.

Park Springs Members and Staff Raise over $5,000 for Alzheimer’s Association

We are proud to announce that on August 6th our Members and present a check for $5,232 to the Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter.

“We exceeded our goal of $5,000,” said Jill Pigott, a Park Springs Member, who was active in helping raise the funds. “There were a lot of Members and staff involved in the fundraising. It was truly a community effort.”

Since May our Members and the Leisure Services staff has held an assortment of events to raise the funds.  Events included bake sales, breakfast buffets, music concerts and movie screenings. Our Atlanta active adult community has been a supporter of the Alzheimer’s Association since its inception five years ago.

Coming together as one statewide chapter has allowed the Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter to reach more people more effectively and more efficiently. There are seven regional offices, along with the state office in Atlanta.

It is estimated that 199,457 Georgians have Alzheimer’s and nearly 500,000 others are affected through their roles as caregivers.  In 2007, the Georgia Chapter was able to serve over 124,000 individuals through programs and services. The Associations mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research and promotion of brain health, and to enhance care and support for all individuals, their families and caregivers.
