Meet The Branscombs – Park Springs Members & Atlanta Active Adults

Members John & Dot Branscomb

Park Springs Members are as congenial a bunch as you’ll find.  But get them in the gym and they become pretty fierce competitors.  The community’s annual Physical Fitness Challenge is a much-anticipated event for many Members, including Dot and John Branscomb.

This year John placed third out of 106 participants and Dot was on a winning team, aptly named The Wonder Women.

There’s plenty of friendly trash talk around the Park Springs fitness center.  But Park Springs Atlanta active adults are serious about earning points for cardio exercise, resistance training, strengthening the brain, taking wellness classes and doing acts of kindness.

“The day after this year’s winners were announced we attended an exercise class, expecting to see very few Members because the competition was over,” John recalls.  “But there were more than 40 people there!”

For the Branscombs, the commitment to staying well is part of daily life.  When John was warned by his cardiologist that he was pre-diabetic and had to lose weight, he jumped into action.  “The doctor recommended a nutritionist and personal trainer in town, but I told him I had both of those right at Park Springs.”

Working with the onsite trainer and nutritionist, John dropped 20 pounds and is no longer pre-diabetic.

“There’s a new light menu option in the dining room that gives me everything I want,” he explains.  The community is known for exceptional food in all of its dining venues.

Whether they’re rehearsing for the annual Park Springs Broadway musical, serving on committees or spending time with friends, the Branscombs choose a full and active life, enhanced by daily efforts to stay fit and healthy.

The Wall Street Journal recently published an article entitled “A Push to Turn ‘For Sale’ Into ‘Sold.’”  Since 2009 Park Springs Atlanta area retirement community has offered the Vintage Home Plan which assists Members in the sale of their current residence.

Members (residents of the community) are able to take advantage of the lifestyle Park Springs offers Atlanta active adults while deferring up to 75% of their entry fee until their home sells.  Park Springs will also assist Members with their move to the community as well as make minor repairs and stage their previous residence if necessary to insure a prompt sale.

Over the past couple years, Park Springs has had 42 Members take advantage of the Vintage Home Plan with 29 having sold their home on average within 10 months.  If you would like to learn more about Park Springs Vintage Home plan, please contact one of our Residency Counselors or visit our web site www.parksprings.com.

Park Springs Members support the cultural arts of Atlanta.

Park Springs is proud to host the Atlanta Symphony Associates for the 6th year as they hold their annual holiday luncheon in the Springhouse Grill.  Many Members of the Atlanta Symphony Associates are Atlanta active adults residing here at Park Springs.

We are so fortunate to have here in our city the Atlanta Symphony as well as the Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet and so many more wonderful social and cultural arts programs to enjoy.  Members of Parks Springs actively participate in local cultural arts, which is yet another example of the rich and lively senior living lifestyle at Park Springs.

Here We Go Again

What an appropriate title for this year’s musical at Park Springs, the Premiere Atlanta retirement community.  For the fourth year in a row, Park Springs’ Member Marvin Himmel will cast, direct and certainly play a part alongside many of Park Spring’s own Atlanta active adults in what is sure to be the best show yet.

I’ll have the opportunity to view the musical tonight and if this years set is any indication, the cast and crew have raised the bar.  The community hall at Park Springs, site of this year’s show, seats 130 and has sold out all 4 performances.

We will post this year’s musical on You Tube.  If you wish to view last year’s performance, please click the following link.

Safety in a “Minute”

Each month, all employees from Park Springs are invited to attend a Safety Meeting.  In this meeting, we review how we are tracking across our safety goals for the year, announce our employee of the month, provide additional safety training and try to have a little fun.

To close out the year, the Safety Committee decided to have a “Minute to Win-It” competition for all of the safety teams.  Each team had to participate in a series of competitions in order to advance.  Congratulations to all participants in the events.  Our overall Team winners will be announced in our January Meeting.

Veterans Day – A Day to Honor Our Veterans

Col. Brent Bracewell is truly one of the nicest most genuine persons you will ever meet. We had the pleasure of having Col. Bracewell be the guest speaker at our Park Springs Veterans Day program on November 11, honoring our Members. Col. Bracewell is currently serving as the Commander of the 78th Aviation Troop Command, charged with the responsibility of overseeing the entire Georgia Army National Guard’s aviation assets to include all aircraft and associated personnel.

During his presentation at our Atlanta retirement community, Col. Bracewell spoke so passionately about his love for the military life, technological advances of the aircrafts and the comrade of his fellow servicemen. At the end of his presentation he was kind enough to extend an invitation to our Members to tour Dobbins Air Reserve Base and have lunch on post. Due to his energetic speech the Atlanta active adult Members were fired up and jumped at this opportunity. Upon arrival at Dobbins Col. Bracewell and his fellow crew welcomed our Members and instantly engaged them in conversations about their daily routines at Dobbins and the multitude of responsibilities they will encounter upon their deployment back to Iraq.

After their presentation, we had the chance to dine with our hostesses and get to know them on a more personal level. At the end of the tour Col. Bracewell invited our Members to come back in the spring where they will have the opportunity to go joyriding in one of the aircrafts. The overall experience was wonderful and enjoyed by all.

Stonehurst Place to Host Art Show for Park Springs Members

We are thrilled to declare 17 of our very own Atlanta active adult Members will be within the few chosen to join other artists of the community to put on for a juried art show. The event will take place at Stonehurst Place, Atlanta’s only eco-friendly luxury bed and breakfast inn, starting on June 8th.

There will be four Atlanta panelist including Peggy Denby, executive director of Keep Atlanta Beautiful, Greg Guhl, a well-known Atlanta creative designer, Shirley Guhl, a member of the Georgia Council for the Arts advisory board and Sarah Stedman, a retired university music professor who has performed extensively in Opera Oratorio.

The members at our premiere Atlanta retirement community are able to use our art studio, that is available to members 24 hours a day. On top of displaying their works of art at the show, members have also created calendars and boxed note cards to sell. All of the proceeds for the sales will go towards the Employee Appreciation Fund at Park Springs.

Park Springs Members Hold Community Garage Sale to raise Funds for Employees

The members at our premium Atlanta retirement community have just held a community garage sale on April 16th, to help raise money for the employees that help them every day. The proceeds will go to the communities’ Employee Appreciation Fund. In the garage sale, both employees and members were able to buy computers, televisions, electronics, artwork, jewelry, and even furniture. All together we rose close to $5,000.

Last year the community donated $203,000 to our employees. This garage sale was just one of many fundraisers that will occur this year.  The members also enjoy a dynamic variety of activities such as; ballroom dancing, trivia night, artist’s workshop and much more. We want our members to feel like the Atlanta active adults that they are and can be.

Park Springs Host DeKalb County Senior Olympics

Who needs an uncomfortable uniform or bulky equipment to play sports? At Park Springs, the Atlanta retirement community, we believe you can enjoy many of life’s sporting events in a different sort of way. We are hosting the DeKalb County Senior Olympics Wii Bowling event in the clubhouse on May 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be an opening ceremony for the Olympics on May 10, at Porter Sanford III Performing Arts & Community Center in Decatur.

There are many different sports that the our members are able to participate in. There are several sports that they can play on the Wii, inspired from one of our members, Floyd Fawcett, that learned from his grandchildren. He instituted a Wii bowling league on our campus two years ago for the Atlanta active adults living here at Park Springs. There is also going to be a water volleyball match on May 13, at the Lou Walker Senior Center in Lithonia. We hope we can capture the gold this year, last year our members received silver and bronze medals.

The DeKalb County Senior Olympics, founded in 1986 was designed to create awareness of the abilities and capabilities of Atlanta active adults. We believe that by participating in the Senior Olympics our members will maintain and improve health and wellness, while promoting an interest in sporting, recreation and physical activities. It can also provide a strong sense of accomplishment.
