Nutrition Fact VS Fiction: Park Spring’s Dietitian Weighs In

As the Registered Dietitian, I am regularly asked questions about healthy eating options. Suggestions from family or friends, as well as the infromation from the mainstream Media, can make these choices seem difficult. You may have read the most current information, but the advice may not be right for you as an individual. Registered Dietitians have sifted through mountains of misinformation and can create personalized meal plans related to your current health condition. The critical consumer should rely on a health expert in order to understand how food can affect you as an individual.

Butter or Margarine?

Butter has been a no-no for years and margarine was the better choice. However, some margarine contain trans-fat. Therefore, the most important tip is to use them both in moderation. If you don’t want to give up your butter, select whipped or light  butter.

 Sea Salt vs. Table Salt?

Nutritional content for each of these is the same. Sea salt is coarser in texture, therefore you may use less than table salt.

Are eggs okay?

Eggs were once off limits to those wanting to reduce cholesterol. As it turns out, they have little effect on dietary cholesterol. Individuals can now eat one per day. In addition to protein, they contain lutein, which may protect against vision loss.

From a Members Point of View: A Week at Park Springs

Every wondered what it would be like to live your retirement as a Park Springs resident? Read the below testimony from one of our many happy residents about how great a week can be here at Park Springs, a premiere Atlanta Retirement Community.

“It’s been an exciting week for Park Springs residents. It took the big red bus we have to transport the many Park Springs residents to the dinner club venture to Dante’s Down the Hatch restaurant in Atlanta. The restaurant was designed around an 18th century sailing ship concept with ship cabins provided for seating small groups to enjoy the experience of a delicious fondue dinner. The hostess fired up the oil pots while we sipped drinks and indulged on the fine bread. The menu offered many fine items to choose from. I ordered the mandarin combo which included cut pieces of chicken, pork, beef, shrimp and vegetables. Each bite was cooked to taste on the long fondue forks. We enjoyed the live entertainment of a guitar player located right behind our table. The diner encouraged fun and friendly conversation and tons of great food. The experience was enjoyed by everyone.

We finished the last of the Olli: Great Decisions series this week as well, with a most interesting lecture onIndonesia. This is a county that many of us knew very little about. These lectures have been extremely interesting and well presented by experts from the field. Each one was thought provoking and very informative and we all look forward to the next series schedule.

On Wednesday, Simone escorted a group of fifteen residents on an architectural tour of Bulkhead and downtownAtlanta. We picked up Jim H,many of us knew him from his guided tour of Northern Atlanta and his visual presentation ofWestern Europe. Jim led us on a leisurely tour through the Bulkhead community pointing out many architecturally outstanding homes of the rich and famous people who live inAtlanta. We learned to identify four basic styles of Greek architecture displayed on many of the house columns. This part of the tour was completed in time to have a delicious lunch at Six Feet Under, located right across the street from the famousOaklandCemetery. The restaurant is noted for its delicious fish dishes and many of us had their famous shrimp or fish baskets which includes their thin sliced fried potatoes. Everyone enjoyed the lunch.

We then took a bus tour aroundOaklandCemeterywith frequent stops for briefing information regarding the history and significant of the cemetery. We then toured downtown, midtown and uptownAtlantawith interesting briefings regarding the architect, architectural significance  and history of many ofAtlanta’s famous buildings. It was noted that many of the downtown buildings were designed by world famous architects like I.M Pei and Richard Meier. We then drove through Olympic park to end up at the world famous Peachtree Christian Church. The church is famous for its world class stained glass windows. The Minster escorted us through the sanctuary explaining each window and how they depicted the birth, life and crucifixion of Christ. This church is world famous and is more beautiful than any that I have see in Europe.

It was great week for Park Springs residents which provided many opportunities for site seeing, entertainment, knowledge of the area and good dining.

A Picture Perfect Way to Begin the New Year

Park Springs hosted the first New Member Breakfast of 2012. We celebrated and welcomed 12 of our newest members. It was an opportunity for the members to get acquainted with other new members, learn more about the Leadership Team and other groups and committees at our premier Atlanta retirement community, and to enjoy a feast to delight the most discerning palate.

The breakfast, which was hosted at the Springhouse Grill, included a buffet of quiche, fresh pastries, grits,  bacon, sausage, cheese blintzes with fruit toppings, omelet  station,
biscuits and gravy. It was in the Springhouse Grill. Park Springs Good Neighbors escorted the new members to breakfast. The Directors and Member Councils provided information on their roles and offered invitations for the new members to get involved.

Here We Go Again

What an appropriate title for this year’s musical at Park Springs, the Premiere Atlanta retirement community.  For the fourth year in a row, Park Springs’ Member Marvin Himmel will cast, direct and certainly play a part alongside many of Park Spring’s own Atlanta active adults in what is sure to be the best show yet.

I’ll have the opportunity to view the musical tonight and if this years set is any indication, the cast and crew have raised the bar.  The community hall at Park Springs, site of this year’s show, seats 130 and has sold out all 4 performances.

We will post this year’s musical on You Tube.  If you wish to view last year’s performance, please click the following link.

Taste of the Good Life

Our Food and Beverage Department put on the first ever “Taste of Park Springs” early in October. The event was a showcase for our foodservice vendors. Some of the delicious creations were returning favorites and some were new original ideas. There were some true works of culinary art by Park Spring’s very own Food and Beverage Department. It was a treat for everyone in attendance. On hand we had Buckhead Beef, Inland Seafood, Performance Food Group, Empire Distributers, Kraft Foods and Phoenix Produce. Special tables were devoted to our Dining Venues (Springhouse Grill, Main Dining Room, Le Cordon Bleu Externs). Our Registered Dietician also had a table and answered any questions the members had about diets or the any of the foods presented. The event was truly a tasty experience!

Waiting for a house to sell?

No!  That’s not for you!

Many currently stuck at the “Waiting Place” are there waiting for their home to sell.  If that’s you, here are a few tips.

Is it priced right?   Homes that are priced right on the front end sell faster and often for more than those who chase the market.  A good appraisal is key and I highly recommend using a Realtor®.  Realtors® provide excellent insight into the market starting with a comparative market analysis (CMA) that assists in setting a price supported by providing a side-by-side comparison of similar homes for sale and recently sold homes in your neighborhood.  CMAs illustrate the range of homes in the marketplace and the features that make them unique, including age, location, number of bedrooms, baths, room sizes, updates, condition, etc.  As a seller, you should be able to see where your home fits – in the top or lower price range of similar homes in your area.

An appraisal uses a variety of sources to establish a homes value and is performed by a professional appraiser.  Appraisals are always performed after an offer is made as part of the loan application process.  Banks use the appraisal to weigh their risk.  If an appraisal does not support the list price banks won’t approve the loan.  By ordering an appraisal on the front end and using it to establish the list price you are best insured when an offer is made it’ll hold up to the banks scrutiny.

Is it move-in ready?  As competitive as today’s market is, your house needs to be move-in ready.  Move-in ready often means making sure that which is broken gets fixed but sometimes may include updating as well.   Don’t worry about needing a house make over but expect to spend a little money repairing settlement cracks or possibly replacing carpet.  In all likelihood you have also lived in your house for a number of years and while the wall paper in the foyer might be your preference it could turn off today’s buyer.  Don’t be offended if a Realtor® recommends painting.  In fact, I encourage you to consider a fresh coat of paint in a neutral color every where.  Not only will the walls look appealing to most but the smell of fresh paint plays on the senses leaving a new, clean impression.

Finding a Realtor®, pricing a house and preparing it to go to market takes time and if you have not sold a house in a while, you might not know where to turn.  At Park Springs we offer the Vintage Home Plan which assists prospective Members in preparing for and selling their house as well as in making the move to our community.  Our plan may also allow you to defer payment of your entry fee and cover some carry costs until your house has sold.  Please visit our Atlanta retirement community website in order to learn more.

Perhaps with these tips, as Dr. Suess wrote, “Somehow you’ll escape all the waiting and staying.  You’ll find the bright places where Boom Bands are playing.  With banners flip-flapping, once more you’ll ride high!  [And at our premiere Atlanta retirement community], ready for anything under the sky.”

A Busy Month for Food Service

The Park Springs Food Service Department was very busy in the month of March as 24,418 meals were served. This is an average of 788 each day. We had 1,131 guests enjoy one of our many dining venues and they were also seen enjoying meals with their family members in Cobblestone. March proved to be a month where many Members and their guests were seen taking full advantage of the variety of dining options available. Catering was also a big part of the month as Park Springs hosted a New Member Brunch where the many new Members to our premiere Atlanta retirement community had the opportunity to visit with the Department Directors and find out different information for each area of the Community.

Park Springs Water Volleyball Team

Some of Park Springs members have been playing water volleyball, for about four years.  They have played in the Dekalb County Senior Olympics for the last two years, and have been victorious with winning silver and bronzed medals!  This 25 member team, has real comradery and dedication for each other.  Please come and join them at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  April 05, 2011, we will be hosting a game right here on campus, against another fine local team.  Stay tuned for more details about our Atlanta active adult community!

Park Springs Showcase

by Lisa Kiely

Park Springs is excited to host a “new talent” audition Sunday, June 5th which we are calling the Park Springs Showcase.

We receive hundreds of requests to perform via phone calls, emails and proposals.   Over the years we have tried many ways to review this information and provide an opportunity for new and exciting talent.

One day I began thinking it would be really fun to have an open audition similar to those you see on popular television shows.  Wanting to entice the talent to come and perform I started thinking of ways to enhance their desire to come out and audition.  I was sure that other Atlanta retirement Communities experienced the same things and then thought it might be nice if we had several Communities involved in the actual event.

Soon we had commitments from Briarcliff Oaks, Clairemont Oaks, Lenbrook and a maybe from Canterbury Court.  I scheduled a meeting to discuss the strategy and together we determined that each Community would provide a judge, three new talents and transportation from their Community to ours for 10-15 of their members. A small stipend will be provided for all talent participants and a monetary prize available for the top three performers. Working together we can provide our talent with the opportunity to be seen by many Atlanta active adult communities and perhaps get more “bookings”!

We have a Park Springs member, Marvin Himmel, who has agreed to be the stage manager to design our stage set up, sound and lighting and we have another member who is considering being our MC.

Park Springs will provide reception for all talent and members, and we will take photographs to share in the future.

I am certain this will be a fun evening for our members, and guests!
